Sussex Asphalte were instructed by our long-standing client, Cheesmur to carry out re-roofing works to the Sports Complex on the University of Sussex campus in Brighton. After a late change of specification, SIKA were instructed to compile specifications to suit the 5 roof areas being re-covered. As part of the client’s remit a completely flame free system was selected in order to achieve a 25-year guarantee. As part of the re-roofing works, 38 rooflights were replaced, additional falls were added to assist with the water run-off, and the insulation upgraded to current regulations.
The biggest challenge on the project was that all the primers and glue had to be installed with temperatures over 5 degrees. With the works commencing in October, and due to run for over 16 weeks, this could have caused a major problem. Working with Cheesmur, the contract was extended to allow for the inclement weather, and we managed to complete the project in just over this timeframe. Crawley Town FC were also training 3 days a week and “noisy” works could not be undertaken during these times, whilst the club were training and indoors. This meant a constant re-jig of tasks and responsibilities between our Site Manager and Cheesmurs. Areas of the roofing deck required removing due to water damage, so again these works could only be undertaken at certain times. All site visits from the manufacturer went well, and any further instructions were carried out without delays. With the scaffold strike date booked, and with no movement on this, the team that commenced the works managed to complete the project. Thus leaving the site completely snag free.
