Sussex Asphalte were appointed by i4 Projects to collaborate on a significant project at the University of Sussex. The focus of the project was the Accelerator Building, a facility crucial for housing scientific equipment used in fundamental studies of physics and material science. This made it imperative to install a high-quality roofing system that could provide long-term waterproofing solution, ensuring that the building and its valuable contents remained completely watertight throughout the installation process.
i4 Projects began by removing existing earth from the roof area to expose the building's structure below. This initial step was critical in preparing the surface for subsequent works. Once the concrete deck was exposed, Sussex Asphalte addressed the undulations in the surface, prior to the installation of the new waterproofing system. A coat of permascreed mastic asphalt was applied to create a smooth and stable substrate .Following the surface preparation, a new Garland felt waterproofing system was installed. This crucial step ensured that the building would be protected from water ingress, safeguarding the sensitive scientific equipment inside. Once the waterproofing system was complete, the next phase involved the installation of the green roof build-up. This aspect of the project was carried out by our partners at Pritchard and Pritchard, specialists in green roofing solutions. The installation of the new roof not only provided a significant thermal upgrade, but also contributed to the building's environmental credentials.
Given that the roof was entirely covered and overgrown on our initial inspection, Sussex Asphalte and i4 Projects had to work together closely and adapt to unforeseen challenges as they arose. This collaborative effort was essential in navigating the complexities of the site and ensuring the project progressed smoothly.
The project was completed with the installation of a wildflower blanket on the adjacent slopes, matching the aesthetic of the green roof. This not only enhanced the visual appeal of the building but also promoted biodiversity.
The successful completion of the roofing project at the Accelerator Building is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Sussex Asphalte, i4 Projects, and Pritchard and Pritchard. Their combined expertise and adaptability ensured that the building remains protected and functional for its critical scientific endeavours.
