PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Cape is a coastal building located right on the seafront in Rottingdean. This project required a robust and durable roofing system capable of withstanding the harsh environmental challenges posed by salt air and high winds.

The project involved stripping 600m² of PVC single membrane roofing down to the concrete deck. Working in partnership with a locally based main contractor responsible for render and paint repairs, Sussex Asphalte played a key role in ensuring the building’s resilience and longevity.

PROJECT CHALLENGES

The roofing project at The Cape in Rottingdean presented unique challenges, requiring Sussex Asphalte to work alongside multiple trades simultaneously. Effective communication and coordination were essential to keep the project on track and ensure seamless collaboration between teams.

One of the critical tasks was scheduling the removal of the render on the walls to raise the height of the upstand to the industry standard of 150mm. This adjustment was vital to stopping water water infiltration that could potentially damage the building’s internal structures. Timing was everything—work needed to be carefully planned to protect the walls from exposure to the elements during the process.

Located right on the south coast, the site was frequently subjected to high winds. These conditions required constant vigilance and adaptability. Housekeeping was maintained at the highest standard to ensure safety and efficiency. All materials were stored securely on the ground, covered to shield them from the elements, and weighed down to prevent movement caused by the strong winds. This meticulous approach, together with our commitment to quality and attention to detail, allowed us to overcome the challenges of the coastal environment and deliver a durable, high-performance roofing solution for The Cape.
