PROJECT OVERVIEW

Sussex Asphalte accomplished a momentous project, renewing the asphalt on St Paul's Cathedral's iconic Stone Gallery, replacing asphalt laid back in 1906, covering an area of 416m². The Gallery's exposure to the elements at 53 meters had led to surface deterioration, causing water ingress that threatened the precious artwork inside the Dome. The successful completion of this project hinged on meticulous project management and expert asphalt installation, both crucial in preserving one of the UK's most treasured architectural structures. To ensure continued public access to sections of the Stone Gallery, the works were thoughtfully phased and in turn, the project was completed ahead of schedule, showcasing exceptional project management.

PROJECT CHALLENGES

Given the Cathedral's delicate fabric and elevated location, transporting all materials to the Gallery required coordination and operation of a series of hoists, ensuring a careful and seamless process. The asphalt was carefully stripped and re-laid in sections to ensure absolute watertightness. This provided the opportunity for the client to inspect the condition of the Portland Stone paving beneath the asphalt, revealing a disused stairwell that the team made safe. The project also involved removing, cleaning, and refitting iron grills covering the central gutter (122 linear meters). A custom-made gutter template was crafted and utilised as a guide during asphalt application, demonstrating the team's workmanship. Further adjustments were made to rainwater outlets for improved drainage and the creation of a vertical upstand into a chase, including a double angle fillet encircling the Gallery's circumference (286 linear meters). The unique nature of this project, its importance and sensitivity, the opportunity it provided to promote roofing expertise, and its successful completion, have solidified its place as one of Sussex Asphalte's most significant endeavors in its 75-year history.
